2020 10 14 220052The Arctic Blue Gin package, featuring images of Northern Lights, has won a ScanStar 2020 award. The Nordic competition was organised by the Finnish Packaging Association. Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, designed the Arctic Blue Gin package. It featured an impressive holographic design inspired by the Northern Lights and used MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright lightweight folding boxboard.

Metsä Board designed the package structure, the original graphics, and the embossing. The Northern Lights image was created by printing on top of Envirofoil®, a plastic-free, holographic metallisation effect designed by US-based paper converter, Hazen. It uses 1% of the aluminium of traditional foil laminates – making it both economical and environmentally friendly. The carton was printed and manufactured by the AM Lithography Corporation.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is delighted to announce that two of its folding boxboards, MetsäBoard Natural FBB and MetsäBoard Pro FBB OBAfree, as well as two food service grades, MetsäBoard Natural FSB Cup and MetsäBoard Pro FSB Cup, have now received home compostability certificates complying with NF T 51-800 standard. Metsä Board’s eco-barrier paperboard MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB already holds the same certificate.

“In order to enhance a circular economy our main target is that our paperboards are recycled after use. But recycling is not always possible – the paperboard may be contaminated due to its contents and therefore cannot be recycled. In such a situation compostability is the next best alternative,” says Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen, Product Safety Manager at Metsä Board.

2020 10 14 084044

All Metsä Board’s paperboards, excluding PE coated grades, already hold industrial compostability certificates complying with DIN EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards. They are all made of pure fresh fibres sourced from sustainably managed Northern European forests. They are also lightweight, contributing to a reduction of the carbon footprint throughout the whole supply chain as well as following the circular economy principles thanks to easy recyclability.

Smurfit Kappa, a FTSE 100 company and leading provider of paper-based packaging solutions, has extended its range of sustainable and biodegradable products for the agricultural sector with the launch of BanaBag®.

BanaBag® is an innovative and sustainable product created by Smurfit Kappa to address the quality assurance needed for excellent bagging during the complete growth cycle of the banana plant. It is a unique solution for organic producers because it protects the fruit from disease and insects, whilst also reducing the overheating that can result from using other materials like plastic.

2020 10 02 095447The BanaBag® is made from cellulose which acts as a natural insulator to the growing bananas maintaining the quality of the product even in higher temperatures.

In addition to advantages in the farming process, BanaBag® is the right choice for banana producers that are supplying international markets where consumers are demanding sustainable products with traceable production processes and supply chains. The BanaBag® is 100% paper-based, making it renewable, recyclable and biodegradable and importantly, it can be used as compost for the soil.

Laurent Sellier, Chief Operating Officer of Smurfit Kappa Europe Paper and Board, commented:  “At Smurfit Kappa, we are committed to innovation and the development of paper-based sustainable products that support our customers in the improvement of their processes and products.  With a continuing drive to make a positive impact on the agricultural sector with innovative solutions like BanaBag®, we aim to positively contribute to better outcomes for farmers who are moving towards more sustainable methods.”

Juan Guillermo Castaneda, CEO of Smurfit Kappa The Americas added: “Some of the largest banana exporters in the world are in South and Central America where we operate. Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic are on the list of the 10 countries that export more than 80% of the world´s bananas, mainly to European markets. This challenges producers to continuously adapt to the fast paced trends of consumers who want to be reassured that the products they buy and consume are sustainable.”

These trends have led the organic banana sector to implement environmentally friendly processes in their plantations, without sacrificing quality and efficiency throughout  all stages of the fruit´s growth.

“Our job is to carefully handle the fruit in the production process so that it arrives in the best possible condition at its final destination – whether international or local,” says Louis Hesselholt, Manager of Dominique Banana in Santa Marta, Colombia. “BanaBag® perfectly matches the needs of our plantation by reinforcing the organic characteristics of our export product and contributing to our goal of eliminating 100% of all contaminant plastic waste from our farms.”

The use of non-sustainable materials in Dominique Banana´s production process was a huge challenge for the company, because of their difficult recycling process and the problems of land pollution. Additionally, because the plastic bunch bag commonly overheated the fruit, this contributed to lost produce. By implementing the Smurfit Kappa BanaBag® in the Campo Alegre and Granja plantations, the fruit´s quality increased, post-harvest recycling processes were optimised and the soil was fertilised since BanaBag® is compostable.

Smurfit Kappa has a number of sustainable products for the agricultural sector including AgroPaperTM for eco-friendly mulching in crop growing, the SoFru corrugated pack for berries,  and Safe and Green biodegradable trays for fresh fruit.

Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper manufacturer, has been recognised in this year’s Austrian Green Star Packaging Awards for two recent sustainable packaging innovations developed using its customer-centric approach, EcoSolutions:

  • Two products developed using Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach have been recognised:
    • PerFORMing, a paper-based packaging with patented barrier for cheese slices, developed for Austrian retailer REWE
    • A fully recyclable, mono-material thermoforming film for Austrian meat producer Hütthaler’s meat and sausage products
  • Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach focuses on developing products for customers using paper where possible and plastic when useful

PerFORMing - paper-based packaging with special barrier coating to protect cheese slices

2020 10 02 091040Austria’s biggest retailer REWE worked together with Mondi to launch a more sustainable cheese tray for their organic brand Ja! Natürlich. Mondi developed a special kraft paper, Advantage Formable Brown, to replace rigid plastic trays. Its unique stretch characteristics mean it can be formed into a shallow tray enhanced with a special barrier coating.

This PerFORMing technology combines 80% paper, a renewable and recyclable raw material, with a 20% barrier coating. “The adoption of this package allowed REWE to reduce the amount of plastic used by 70% and the carbon footprint by two-thirds,” said Marko Schuster, COO of Mondi Functional Paper & Films.

Fully recyclable thermoforming plastic film for meat

Mondi was able to reinvent packaging for Austrian meat producer Hütthaler. The packaging was designed for recycling while maintaining optimum barrier properties and replacing a previous, less sustainable, packaging.

“Together with Hütthaler, we developed a mono-material film solution for thermoforming applications that can be fully recycled, and still provides a barrier to protect food. The new film meets high food standards, preserves shelf life and also helps Hütthaler to save on disposal fees due to its recyclability,” said Andreas Koppitz, COO of Mondi's Consumer Flexibles business.

Schuster and Koppitz, on behalf of their teams, expressed how proud they are to win these awards. Both products underscore Mondi’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions that contribute to a better world.

Read more about PerFORMing here: “Mondi’s sustainable paper-based packaging solution for food trays”

Read more about the fully recyclable thermoforming plastic film here: “Mondi partners with meat producer Hütthaler to create new fully recyclable plastic packaging”

Technical details about PerFORMing:

  • Formable paper packaging with a patented barrier
  • Made from natural brown paper (Advantage Formable Brown)
  • Ideally suited for shallow food trays (e.g. for cheese, meat or fish)
  • High symmetrical stretch for uniform formability
  • Suitable for existing filling lines
  • Results in 70% less plastic used compared to rigid plastic trays
  • 70% CO2 reduction compared to plastic alternative

Technical data for the recyclable thermoforming film:

  • Newly developed plastic film for thermoforming applications, which fulfills all functionalities of previous multi-material structures
  • Completely recyclable through the use of a mono-material
  • Significant improvement of the CO2 balance compared to existing packaging is possible up to 50%
  • Suitable for packaging products with excellent sealability requirements, as top and bottom film are made of the same material
  • Gives food a longer shelf life due to a unique gas barrier

VPK’s corrugated packaging division will operate under a single brand name: VPK Packaging. The new name replaces the Rigid, Ondulys and Peterson brands in the UK, Ireland, France and the Nordic countries respectively. A new unified logo and visual identity reflect the overarching vision of the future that continues to foster environmental responsibility and local customer relationships.

New growth strategy targets international and local customer segments

In the last seven years, VPK’s international growth has been especially strong. Recent acquisitions, including Peterson in Scandinavia (a joint venture with Klingele Paper and Packaging Group), an increased shareholding in CorrBoard the UK corrugated sheet manufacturer, tube producer Corenso and expansions in both Western and Eastern Europe, have led to a doubling of consolidated turnover.

This international expansion will now be reflected in a single VPK brand for the whole corrugated packaging division. From 1st October, VPK Packaging will replace the Rigid brand name alongside Ondulys and Peterson in France, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The unified corrugated packaging brand will increase the focus on the growing international customer base.

2020 10 02 085435

CEO Pierre Macharis said: “Our aim is to take sustainable growth to the next level, both ecologically and economically. We will think and act globally, but without losing the connection with our local customers and their products. Bringing sustainable, fully recyclable packaging to the market within a circular economic model will remain our core business. Staying true to our unique DNA, but with a clearer focus on international growth.”

The introduction of the new branding strategy comes with a new logo and visual identity, inspired by VPK’s environmental responsibility in sustaining the circular economy as well as four common company values: ownership, trust, care and beyond.

Wim Messiaen, COO of the Corrugated Packaging Division, said: “The central brand highlights our vision of sustainable business and growth, supported by international relationship management and a bigger emphasis on innovation in the network of our businesses. Our new brand enables employees and customers to identify more easily with the organisation and our values.

With this new branding strategy, we as a company are signalling our aims, vision and values to a constantly changing world, and honing our products and services to meet the evolving needs of our customers. We want to offer more transparency by communicating from a single brand and letting our structures grow organically in line with the network of our customers.”

In addition to VPK Packaging, VPK Group’s overall brand portfolio includes Corex for core and tube production, Smart Packaging Solutions for the production of solid board packaging and VPK Paper for the production of recycled paper.

About VPK Group

VPK produces recycled paper, corrugated cardboard packaging, solid board packaging, cores and tubes. The international packaging group operates according to a circular economic business model. Employing over 6200 people across 65 locations in 20 countries, the group records a turnover of €1.5 billion. For more information about our activities please visit: www.vpkgroup.com.

BillerudKorsnäs joins forces with Syntegon Technology to launch Recyclable Flow Wrap, a paper based packaging solution that enables a shift from conventional plastic to renewable and recyclable materials.

Flow wrap is a type of flexible packaging used for many products in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector and today plastic film flow wrap is standard for FMCG.

BillerudKorsnäs Recyclable Flow Wrap is an innovative paper packaging solution, based on primary fibres from well-managed forests and with high barrier performance that can be recycled as paper.

2020 09 29 090115

The product enables the shift from conventional plastic to paper and is suitable for medium to high barrier requirements such as those posed by chocolate bars and other confectionery as well as bakery product. A patent application for BillerudKorsnäs Recyclable Flow Wrap is pending.

Recyclable flow wrap is verified by Syntegon Technology and tested with their retrofit upgrade kit “paper-ON-form”.

“We are happy to launch a paper based flow wrap solution. The product is recyclable as paper and brand owners don’t have to compromise neither product shelf life nor converting productivity in comparison to plastic packaging options” says Peter Åström, Project Manager Recyclable Flow Wrap

With the Syntegon upgrade kit paper-ON-form it can be installed on existing horizontal flow wrapping machines and new flow wrappers from Syntegon Packaging Systems AG. The solution was engineered in Syntegon´s own development center in Beringen, Switzerland, and consists of a flow-wrap forming unit and sealing tools or paper cold-sealing applications. The kit is already being used on existing lines from international manufacturers for packaging chocolate bars in paper.

”To make flow wraps future-proof we have to take a holistic approach. In our test lab, we are concentrating on three elements. Avoidance. Recycling. Recovery. Our retrofit kit allows customers the transition to paper packaging on their existing Syntegon Packaging Systems horizontal flow wrapping machine – without any restrictions regarding speed compared to the existing for cold-sealable paper,” says Christoph Langohr, Project Manager of Sustainability Horizontal Packaging.

By introducing Recyclable Flow Wrap, BillerudKorsnäs brings forward innovation based on renewable and biodegradable materials meeting brand owners and legislators´ need to reduce littering and increase recycling without compromising on the barrier characteristics.

The pre-drying section is followed by a film press and the post-drying section, two calenders (one hard nip, one soft nip) and a coating section with three roll coaters, including air drying equipment, as well as a pope reel and a rewinder. A roll transport system and sheet cutter complete the production line.

Apart from a new PrimeControl and multi-motor drive system for the entire line, ANDRITZ will extend the motor control center and start up the existing QCS system. The ANDRITZ PrimeControl includes extended features for process automation throughout the paper mill and minimizes the number of subsystems and associated interfaces. Thanks to the advanced multi-motor drive system, energy and power consumption will be reduced.

Alexandr Kolyada of JSC Management Company says: “For us, the completion of our board production line is a real milestone! We are happy that ANDRITZ is supporting us with its experience and know-how.”
